From Home Birth to Health Awareness: A Transformative Encounter

Last August 2023, we once again connected with the local residents in Barangay Timalang, gain insights into their healthcare practices, and develop health plans to enhance the well-being of the community. One particular encounter during this exposure stood out - an interview with a resident who had experienced a home birth last July 2023.

The interview revealed compelling reasons behind her decision to deliver her child at home

Lack of Knowledge

The resident, like many others in the community, had limited understanding of true and false labor. This knowledge gap played a crucial role in her choice to have a home birth.

Early Expected Due Date (EDD)

Her expected due date (EDD) was initially set for September 2023. However, the baby decided to make an early entrance into the world, catching her by surprise.

Missed Mother's Class

Unfortunately, the resident arrived late and missed out on crucial information provided in the Mother's Class, which could have prepared her for a facility-based delivery.

These reasons shed light on the challenges faced by residents in Barangay Timalang when it comes to making informed decisions about their healthcare, especially during pregnancy and childbirth.

However, this encounter was not just about identifying the issues; it was also about initiating positive change. The medical students saw an opportunity to intervene and make a difference in the community's health practices. They began by providing valuable health teaching to the resident and her family, focusing on the following key areas:

1. Risks and Complications: The students discussed the potential risks and complications associated with home-based deliveries. They emphasized the importance of having skilled healthcare professionals present during childbirth to ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby.

2. Benefits of Facility-Based Delivery: The students highlighted the numerous benefits of opting for a facility-based delivery, including access to medical expertise, emergency care, and a safe and sterile environment.

3. Penalties Imposed by the Barangay: It was essential to inform the resident about the penalties imposed by the barangay for home births, not to discourage, but to stress the significance of complying with local regulations designed to protect maternal and infant health.

This encounter serves as a testament to the transformative power of education and awareness. By engaging with the community, these medical students were able to bridge the knowledge gap and empower residents to make informed choices about their health. As they continue their community immersion journey, they hope to inspire positive change and contribute to the overall well-being of Barangay Timalang. In the end, it's not just about delivering babies; it's about delivering knowledge and compassion to those who need it most.
